🛢️ Guest Speaker Session – Understanding Buckling in Boiler Shells – A Practical Case Study
📅 Sunday, 21st Dec | 9:30 AM
Class Summary:
Buckling Capacity Evaluation of a Boiler Spherical Partition Shell
Buckling is one of the most dangerous failure modes in pressure equipment—quiet, sudden, and often misunderstood.
In this class, we will walk through a real engineering case study on evaluating the buckling capacity of a boiler spherical partition shell, using both design codes and advanced analysis.
You will learn:
1) How a spherical partition shell behaves under external pressure and compressive stresses
2) How to calculate buckling capacity using PD 5500, step by step, with a worked example
3) How to cross-check results using EN 1999-1-3 and understand why different codes give different margins
4) How linear and nonlinear finite element analyses are used to identify critical buckling modes and realistic capacity
5) How to judge whether a design is safe, conservative, or dangerously optimistic
This class is ideal for engineers who:
1) Review pressure vessel or boiler designs
2) Deal with partitions, diaphragms, or thin shells under external pressure
3) Want to move beyond “code checking” and understand actual structural behavior
By the end of the session, you won’t just know the equations—you’ll understand what really controls buckling, how to defend your design technically, and how to spot risks before they become failures.
We keep the fee low — only RM27 per session — so learning remains accessible to every engineer who wants to grow.
Ir. Dr. Mohd Shahrom Ismail is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam, and a Professional Engineer (Ir.) registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
